En savoir plus sur le livre

Benavente received acclaim from notable figures such as Lope de Vega, Juan Pérez de Montalbán, and Tirso de Molina. His sharp satirical genius and keen observational skills positioned him as a precursor to nineteenth-century Costumbrismo. He was also the first to compose interludes in verse with sung sections, a practice that gained popularity later on. In 1645, his works were compiled in the anthology Jocoseria, endorsed by Vélez de Guevara, which includes forty-eight pieces. It is estimated that he created around 900 brief dramatic works, including praises and comic ballads, though most have been lost or remain unattributed. His piece "Los muertos vivos" was notably used by Francisco Bernardo de Quirós as a counterargument for his extreme beliefs. Benavente's contributions to the theatrical landscape reflect a unique blend of humor and social commentary, marking his significance in the evolution of Spanish literature.
