Turning Angel marks the return of Penn Cage, a lawyer, alongside Drew Elliott, the doctor who saved his life during their childhood. Both prominent figures in Natchez, they serve on the school board of St. Stephen's Prep. The community is rocked when the nude body of a young female student is discovered near the Mississippi River. Penn is particularly affected, learning that his best friend may be implicated in her murder due to a secret relationship with the victim, Kate Townsend. A star student and athlete with a bright future, Kate also led a hidden life that her lover knew little about. When Drew asks Penn to defend him, Penn's sense of loyalty overrides his instincts. However, they soon find themselves ensnared in a web of blackmail and violence. Drew's behavior raises doubts in Penn, while Shad Johnson, the ambitious black district attorney, targets Drew, leading to his arrest and halting the investigation into Kate's killer. Realizing he must uncover the truth to save his friend, Penn delves into the hidden world of St. Stephen's, where the reality starkly contrasts with appearances. This journey reveals a disturbing landscape filled with troubled teens and one true psychopath. As Penn uncovers the truth behind Kate's death, he realizes that his quiet Southern town will be forever changed.
