En savoir plus sur le livre
This detailed account chronicles the Vikings' brutal year-long siege of medieval Paris in 885–86, a pivotal event that led to the foundation of modern France. Following the coronation of Charles the Fat as King of the Franks, Danish Vikings sailed up the Seine demanding tribute. The Franks' refusal prompted the Vikings to besiege Paris, which was defended by only 200 men under Odo, Count of Paris, leaving it seemingly vulnerable against the Viking fleet. The city, centered on the fortified Île de la Cité, held out against the Viking onslaught. After a year, Charles' army arrived to lift the siege, but his decision to allow the Vikings to sail upstream against the revolting Burgundians outraged the Parisians. They refused to let the Vikings return via the Seine, forcing them to transport their boats overland to reach the North Sea. With Charles' death in 888, the people of Île de France elected Odo as their king, marking the end of the Carolingian line and the emergence of a new kingdom. This fully illustrated volume, complete with maps and strategic diagrams, captures the full story of this significant expedition, emphasizing its importance in the history of France and the establishment of the nation.
