Most mainstream interpretations either condemn Strauss as an extreme right-wing opponent of liberal democracy or celebrate him as a traditional defender of Western civilization. Havers rejects both views, arguing that Strauss was neither a Far Right figure nor a conservative, but a secular Cold War liberal who advocated for Anglo-American democracy as the universal regime, independent of a Christian foundation. Strauss refutes Edmund Burke's traditional conservative belief that democracy requires Christian moral influence. Havers asserts that Strauss’s denial of Christianity’s role in shaping Western civilization is pivotal to the Straussian portrayal of democracy.
