En savoir plus sur le livre

The Cold War was a war without battles and War Without Battles chronicles Canada's significant role. It describes how, through the professionalism and dedication of all its ranks, it earned for Canada a respect and admiration out of all proportion to its actual size. The story of Canada's NATO brigade is told with detailed accounts of the brigade group's performance in major NATO wargames and exercises over a 40 year period, and discusses how NATO's operational strategy, as well as Canada's political leaders over the decades, affected the brigade's evolution. The brigade's activities during the Gulf War and in the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990's are also covered. Over 100 interviews were conducted and the book is replete with anecdotes and stories from Canadian soldiers themselves. These entail all aspects of a soldier's life and service in Germany such as living among the German citizenry, the troops' fanaticism with unit hockey and brigade sports, the regular "bug out" deployments which kept attitudes and skills honed, and of course the ever constant training. Canada's reputation as a peacekeeper came about largely because of the activities of the NATO brigade in Europe. As politicians and the public alike are questioning the value, role, and structure of Canada's military, a look back at the men and women who helped to build this reputation, and the leaders that led them, provides a valuable perspective.
