En savoir plus sur le livre
In his second novel, McCrum showcases his talent for atmospheric narration, yet the story remains thin, focusing on the familiar theme of a passive man's radicalization. The protagonist, Philip Taylor, a 30-year-old London academic, has lived a risk-averse life. His older brother, Daniel, an investigative journalist, has rejected their family's pharmaceutical business to expose anti-Establishment issues, which has estranged him from their father. After years of separation, Philip is drawn into Daniel's tumultuous world when he receives a call from Daniel's girlfriend, Stevie, who is concerned about Daniel's disappearance. Tragically, Daniel is found dead, prompting Philip to seek answers about his brother's life and the corruption he uncovered in their family's business abroad. As Philip moves into Daniel's home with Stevie, he begins to shed his passivity, fueled by their shared anger. However, he discovers that a terrorist is storing explosives in the house and chooses to keep this secret, fearing the loss of his newfound confidence and connection with Stevie. This decision leads to dire consequences when the terrorist, pursued by police, takes Philip hostage, resulting in a tragic outcome. While the narrative may resonate differently in Britain, the themes echo similar American stories from the Seventies, making it feel somewhat contrived.
