This substantial study is full of colour images that celebrate the work of Robert Campin, the 15th-century master of early Netherlandish painting, whose achievements have been largely overlooked through history, particularly because he rarely signed his works, and has been overshadowed by the van Eyck brothers. Firmly based on a detailed technical analysis and art-historical appreciation of the paintings themselves, Thuerlemann traces developments in Campin's career and artistic life against the context of 15th-century European art. A section on Campin's place in history is followed by the catalogue which includes works that have traditionally been wrongly attributed.
