En savoir plus sur le livre

It has long been a subject of surprise to the author that no person has written a history of Nantucket. Such a work, commencing with the settlement of the island by the English and continuing to the present day, could not fail to contain much of interest and instruction. There are few places of equal magnitude whose annals would afford matters for a more valuable volume. The occasion that drew some of the first families to settle at Nantucket was to avoid the rigors of the law against the people called Quakers. To enjoy the exercise of the rites of hospitality and of religious freedom, they were willing to leave their homes.
