Die Beiträge dieses Bandes stimmen methodologisch darin überein, daß sie den Vergleich in allen seinen Möglichkeiten, ad intra und ad extra, für die Erforschung des Phänomens des an-tiken Christentums bevorzugen. Dies bedeutet, daß Quellen, die zum größten Teil bekannt sind, unter neuen Gesichtspunkten jenseits der Grenzen ihrer traditionellen Klassifikationen und ihrer gesicherten Interpretationen neu gelesen werden, ohne daß jedoch die soliden Grundlagen der philologischen und historisch-kritischen Methode aufgegeben werden. Aus-gehend von einem solchen gemeinsamen Ansatz, untersuchen die Autoren verschiedene Aspekte der Geschichte und Kultur des antiken Christentums, auch in ihrer sprachlichen Viel-falt. Auf die Analyse der kanonischen, exegetischen, literarischen oder hagiographischen Texte folgt der Versuch einer Synthese, die danach strebt, so weit wie möglich die Schranken zu überwinden, die gewöhnlich die The essays in this volume share a methodological approach in that they give preference to all available forms of comparison, ad intra and ad extra, in the investigation of ancient Christianity. This means that sources which are mostly well known can be read in new ways from perspectives outside their usual classifications and agreed interpretations, but without sacrificing the solid foundations of philological and historical-critical method. Taking this as a common point of departure, the authors examine different aspects of the history and culture of ancient Christianity, including its linguistic variety. Analyses of canonical, exegetical, literary or hagiographical texts are followed by an attempt to form a synthesis which will, as far as is possible, overcome the barriers which usually stand between the different subject areas within classical studies.
