En savoir plus sur le livre
The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is extremely vulnerable to floods and therefore the establishment of dyke systems is generally considered an appropriate approach to flood control. Based on intensive field work in the heart of the delta, the author investigates current dyke planning practices as well as its implementation at district and commune levels. The research reveals that professional planners still lack expertise and that the outcome of their work does not meet the local needs. Moreover, the dyke system also produces adverse negative impacts on the ecosystems and livelihoods. The findings indicate that improved planning and a higher level of local participation might ensure sustainable management of the region's floodplains.
