This volume presents a detailed and original study of the traditional doctrine of terms, exploring how scholastic philosophers might have conceived and defended their ideas using contemporary logic and semantics. It offers a systematic reconstruction of significant concepts in the history of logic, remaining faithful to the relevant texts. The work begins with an exposition of the doctrine centered on the semantic opposition between significatio and suppositio, akin to the notions of sense and reference. Rather than merely translating passages into predicate logic, the author develops a formalization based on a careful systematization of the texts, incorporating an ontology of substance and accident. This approach allows for a straightforward reconstruction of syllogistic logic via sequent-calculus and extends to a theory of supposition.
