Over the past three years, monuments have been re-evaluated globally, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. This volume explores the intricate relationships between monuments, memory, and cities in Central and South-Eastern Europe from a historical perspective. It emphasizes the role of (national) art since the nineteenth century, especially during the Second World War and across various socialist countries. The contributors critically analyze the diverse visual representations of historical memory and the complexities of “dissonant heritage” through a multidisciplinary lens, incorporating art history, cultural memory studies, historical visual studies, literary criticism, architectural history, and heritage protection. Case studies focus on cities in Croatia, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Northern Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
