The rise of remote interpreting (RI) via telephone and video link has significantly transformed the delivery of interpreting services. While clinical research has shown positive outcomes for RI, studies in legal contexts indicate that it may impact the quality of interpreter-mediated communication. This work explores the effects of RI on healthcare interpreting quality through three series of simulated doctor-patient encounters, each featuring a different interpreter and interpreting method: face-to-face, telephone, and video interpreting. These sessions were recorded, transcribed, and annotated based on established interpreting study categories. Quantitative analyses focused on miscommunication and interaction management to identify relationships between message equivalence and interactional issues, as well as the influence of environmental and technological factors. The data underwent comparative qualitative analyses, triangulated with insights from thirty post-simulation interviews with participants. The findings provide valuable insights for users of RI, helping them anticipate and address potential communication challenges.
