Digital approaches to Ethiopian and Eritrean studies

En savoir plus sur le livre

What can be achieved with data on the manuscript tradition of Eritrea and Ethiopia through Text Encoding Initiative and Linked Open Data? This work presents practical examples for scholars in this field with limited digital skills, demonstrating how to utilize openly accessible web data, drawing from the Beta maṣāḥǝft and TraCES projects at Universität Hamburg. Each chapter addresses specific aspects of various written artefacts, exploring codicology, literary traditions, spatial distribution, and historical geography. The discussion includes lexicographic resources and presents exploratory queries, allowing readers to replicate these examples on similar datasets. Emphasis is placed on how openly accessible and collaboratively edited data regarding the manuscript traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea can be integrated with other openly available datasets. The aim is to spark interest in the use of TEI and LOD among specialists in Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies while also offering insights into the principles guiding the digital products of the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies, thereby benefiting scholars in Digital Humanities.
