En savoir plus sur le livre

Set in a post-apocalyptic future after a nuclear war, the story follows David, a young boy in a community of religious and genetic fundamentalists. This society vigilantly guards against any deviations from their interpretation of God's creation, labeling them as 'offenses' or 'blasphemies.' Offenses include any unusual plants or animals, which are publicly destroyed amid hymns. Blasphemies refer to humans exhibiting any abnormal traits, who are banished to the wild, deemed unsafe and influenced by evil. David grows up with constant reminders to maintain purity and watch for mutants. Initially, he accepts these beliefs, but he is profoundly disturbed when his devout parents force his aunt to abandon her abnormal child. Eventually, David discovers he possesses a unique ability that could either lead to his death or open the door to a new world of freedom. This narrative is a masterfully crafted piece of classic science fiction, echoing themes relevant today, as genetic and religious fundamentalism continue to rise, reflecting the tensions of the Cold War era in which it was written.
