Brightness contrast of solar magnetic elements observed by Sunrise

En savoir plus sur le livre

The Sun's irradiance is modulated across various time scales, influenced by small-scale solar magnetic elements like quiet-Sun networks and active region plages. Evaluating their contrast in relation to magnetic field strength is crucial for understanding solar irradiance variation. This thesis enhances previous contrast studies by utilizing high-resolution data from the balloon-borne solar observatory Sunrise, collected during its 2009 and 2013 flights. The unique access to UV wavelengths in this data significantly contributes to the analysis. The initial sections reveal that contrast variation with magnetic field strength aligns qualitatively with radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the quiet Sun. Notably, at a continuum wavelength near 500 nm, contrast remains stable at high field strengths, suggesting effective resolution of these features. Furthermore, contrast levels in the quiet-Sun network surpass those in solar plage, with the disparity diminishing at greater atmospheric heights, consistent with empirical flux tube models. In the final section, the thesis employs solar limb data from Sunrise to assess stray light's impact on the total point spread function of the telescope.
