This doctoral thesis investigates the influence of education and other factors on labor market outcomes through microeconometric methods. The introduction sets the stage for the analysis. A randomized field experiment among German HR managers in Chapter 2 evaluates the importance of skill signals—cognitive skills, social skills, and maturity—when reviewing applicants' CVs. Findings reveal that all three signal types affect interview invitations, with GPAs and social skills being significant for both genders. However, the importance of other signals varies by gender and education level, with females particularly benefitting from IT and language skills, while males are favored for maturity. Chapter 3 examines how beliefs about refugees' education levels shape natives' attitudes towards them, utilizing a survey experiment with 5,000 university students. Results indicate that improved perceptions of refugees' education heighten concerns about labor market competition among high-skilled natives but do not alter general attitudes, as economic factors play a minor role compared to humanitarian considerations. Chapter 4 explores the effects of labor market deregulation on supply and demand, focusing on a change in Germany's Trade and Crafts code.
