En savoir plus sur le livre

The rarity of tumors in the facial skeleton, whether odontogenic or osteogenic, limits the ability of a single observer to fully understand their epidemiology and clinical behavior, even with extensive case material. To address this, collaboration among scientists is essential for compiling and sharing meaningful information. In 1971, the German-Austrian Swiss Association for the Study of Tumors of the Face and Jaws (DOSAK) initiated a special registry for these tumors, which has since been integrated into the bone tumor registry at the Swiss Association for Pathology at the University of Basel. A symposium sponsored by DOSAK in 1974 focused on odontogenic and osteogenic tumors, showcasing illustrative cases that highlighted the complexities of these lesions. This led to significant reclassifications, including shifts from benign to malignant classifications and vice versa, revealing that some radical and mutilating surgeries were unwarranted based on the new classifications. The discussions emphasized the necessity of considering all relevant factors—epidemiologic, clinical, radiologic, and pathohistological—when making a diagnosis.
