Hemingway and the Germans

En savoir plus sur le livre

Germany was not Hemingway's initial choice in Europe, overshadowed by Spain, Italy, and France. However, the country and its culture significantly influenced his life. He made multiple trips to German-speaking regions, both as a reporter and for leisure, learning enough German to communicate effectively. He enjoyed showcasing his language skills, humorously referring to himself as "Hemingstein" and incorporating German phrases into his works. During the Spanish Civil War, he befriended German communist fighters like Alfred Kantorowicz and Hans Kahle, supporting them financially during their exile and assisting some in relocating to the USA. Throughout World War II, he followed the US Army from Normandy to the Hürtgenwald, documenting battles against German forces without prejudice, recognizing both good and bad Germans. He admired those who opposed Fascism and shared his values of courage and defiance, including Erwin Rommel and Ernst Udet. Hemingway was drawn to individuals of German descent, such as his first love Agnes von Kurowsky and his wives Pauline Pfeiffer and Martha Gellhorn. He maintained lifelong friendships with figures like actress Marlene Dietrich and screenwriter Peter Viertel. Notably, the German magazine "Der Querschnitt" was instrumental in publishing his early works, and Ernst Rowohlt was among the first foreign publishers to recognize his talent.
