En savoir plus sur le livre
August Sander, a pioneer of the documentary style, created iconic photographs that captured German society during the Weimar Republic. Beginning his life's work towards the end of World War I from his Cologne studio, he embarked on a project titled People of the 20th Century. Although his first publication was banned by the National Socialist government in 1936, Sander continued his work, taking identity photographs of persecuted Jews around 1938. During World War II, he documented migrant workers and included these images in his project, alongside portraits of national socialists taken before and during the war. Despite being unable to publish his monumental work during his lifetime, Sander's vision is championed by his descendants today. This collection presents his photographs for the first time, including contact prints, letters, and details about the lives of those portrayed. The subjects, dignified men and women, defy Nazi efforts to marginalize them. Sander's restrained yet powerful documentary approach captures the essence of his subjects, presenting them with dignity while revealing the ordinary nature of those who perpetrated violence. This compelling work has received recognition, winning the German Photobook Prize for its impactful conceptual execution and craftsmanship.
