Theodor Fontane, briefly a citizen of Burg in 1840, later captured the region's beauty in his renowned works, "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg," which became a bestseller of its time. His writings continue to resonate today, inspiring nature enthusiasts to explore the Märkische landscape. In the same area, known as Kreis Jerichow I, another figure emerged 50 years later—Walter Knust, a teacher at the Realschule in Möckern. While he did not write poetry, he similarly celebrated the local flora and fauna, encouraging many to appreciate their surroundings, including the forests and river valleys of the Elbe, Ehle, and Ihle. Knust's book, "In der Heimat ist es schön," offers practical insights into planning walks or bike rides in the local area. However, many of the paths and natural features he described have changed or disappeared over time due to agricultural advancements and environmental alterations. Despite these transformations, the expansive agricultural landscape in the southern part of the district remains, particularly around Gommern, Möckern, and the fertile Elbaue region, showcasing the enduring charm of the area.
