En savoir plus sur le livre

This anthology brings together over 350 texts from artist and activist Gustav Metzger (1926–2017), highlighting his significance as a 20th-century figure. Known for using unstable materials and chemical reactions, Metzger's art embodies change, destruction, and renewal. He was also a prolific writer and theoretician, coining concepts like auto-destructive and auto-creative art through his manifestos in 1959 and 1961. Edited by Mathieu Copeland, this collection makes Metzger’s essential writings accessible, featuring key texts such as his manifestos on Auto-Destructive Art, the essay on Auto-Destructive Architecture, and an inspiring interview with Buckminster Fuller. His work critiques contemporary art and society, reflecting his early engagement with environmental and social issues. Born in Nuremberg to Polish Jewish parents, Metzger escaped Nazi Germany via the Kindertransport in 1939 and became politically active in post-war Britain, advocating for nuclear disarmament. Disturbed by the destructive potential of technology, he shifted from traditional painting and sculpture to create works that confront societal issues. His legacy continues to resonate, with exhibitions at the Serpentine Galleries in 2009 and MAMAC Nice in 2017 showcasing his impactful contributions.
