En savoir plus sur le livre
Throughout the nineteenth century, significant social and political changes, technological advancements, and exposure to non-Western cultures profoundly impacted Germany’s built environment. Economic challenges tied to Germany’s colonial endeavors compelled architects to move away from centuries of ornate architectural styles, opting instead for structural technologies and materials suited to the local contexts of remote colonies, including prefabricated systems. As German architects gathered insights about their colonial territories in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific—through expeditions, international exhibitions, and interactions with colonial officials—they disseminated their findings in books and articles, and organized lectures and exhibits. This exchange stimulated progressive architectural thought and influenced the emerging modern architectural language in Germany. Offering comprehensive interpretations that bridge architectural history and postcolonial studies, Itohan Osayimwese examines the impact of colonialism, travel, and globalization on the evolution of modern architecture in Germany from the 1850s to the 1930s. By situating these architectural developments within a broader global context, the work highlights their significance in shaping the trajectory of architecture worldwide in the twentieth century.
