Jáchym Fleig was awarded the DEW21 Art Prize in 2016. Fleig convinced the jury with his expansive, sometimes oppressive installations. Fleig sees himself through and through as a sculptor. He is interested in materiality, proportion, the relationship between sculpture and the environment. Unconventional materials and craftsmanship give his sculptures a processual character. They seek their role models in nature (hive, stalactites), but are themselves completely "artificial" (wood, cardboard, plaster). Like parasites, his work populates ceilings, floors and walls. The book appears as part of a series of publications presenting and honoring the winners. Each catalog will be published on the occasion of the award-winning exhibition in Dortmunder U.
