Journalist Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for this epic account of the May 1996 disaster. Unabridged.

Into Thin Air recounts one of the first commercial expeditions to Mount Everest, which tragically turns into a fight for survival. The personal stories of the expedition members are incredibly touching, and for me as a woman, I was particularly moved by the Japanese mountaineer Yasuko, who proudly said that while her husband cleans at home, she climbs the mountains. Yasuko lost her life on this expedition.
