The myth of Schloss Burg

En savoir plus sur le livre

In 1133, Count Adolf II of Berg established Schloss Burg, marking the beginning of a rich history that continues to captivate people today. As a prominent landmark of the Bergisches Land, alongside Altenberg Cathedral, Schloss Burg has drawn visitors far beyond its original borders. The Castle Reconstruction Foundation is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the site, emphasizing the importance of conveying its historical significance. Photographer Thomas E. Wunsch offers a fresh perspective on Schloss Burg through expressive images that capture contemporary scenes and the castle's vibrant life. During his visit, he meets the wandering monk Ignatius, who serves as a guide through the castle's storied past. The book chronicles the history of the Counts of Berg, beginning in 1101 with Count Adolf I and the construction of the castle, followed by expansions under Engelbert II. After Engelbert's murder in 1225, the male line of the House of Berg ended, and the castle passed to the House of Limburg. Significant events, such as the Battle of Worringen in 1288, are highlighted, alongside the 20th-century efforts to restore Schloss Burg, transforming it into a venue for medieval treasures and historical events.
