Innovations in the area of digital finance are leading to a change in the services offered worldwide. How Switzerland can position itself as a financial centre in competition with other financial centres depends on the question as to what extent the current regulatory efforts of the legislator, the Federal Council and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) leave room for innovation. The reader of this thesis will find out, in theory and practice, about the meaning of risk-based compliance for business models based on distributed ledger technology (also called «blockchain technology»). These models include exchange services for virtual currencies, wallet providers, storage solutions and smart contract applications. Furthermore, this thesis includes possible starting points for a feasible regulatory concept.
