Today's internationalization and globalization challenge the discipline of history, revealing that the nation-state paradigm is no longer sufficient. This shift has led to new historiographical approaches that transcend national borders, including transnational and global history, as well as source-based International History. The latter is characterized by its openness and diverse perspectives, which should not be mistaken for randomness. This volume, developed by the International History research unit at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, features 27 articles that contribute to ongoing scholarly discussions in innovative ways. It not only explores the historiographical dimensions of International History but also represents the first comprehensive effort to compile research across all historical periods. By encompassing topics from ancient to contemporary times, it historicizes the concept of the state and moves beyond the traditional focus on 19th and 20th-century nation-states. Additionally, the volume connects theory and practice, with numerous case studies that highlight the thematic expansion of International History without enforcing a rigid framework.
