Design of continuous crystallization processes

En savoir plus sur le livre

This thesis addresses two main topics. First, it develops a novel method for estimating the kinetics relevant to the model-based design, control, and optimization of crystallization processes. This short-cut method analyzes the evolution of crystal size distribution during well-planned polythermal experiments, extracting necessary information from a characteristic part of the particle collective for efficient kinetics quantification. The method's feasibility is demonstrated through systematic theoretical and experimental studies, leading to the characterization of three different binary substance systems regarding their kinetics. One of these systems is then utilized for designing a continuous process. The second part introduces an innovative fractional counter-current crystallization process that overcomes previous disadvantages by employing repeated crystallization and dissolution to transport the solid phase in a dissolved state. This enables a pseudo-continuous automated process akin to simulated moving bed chromatography or mixer-settler plants for extraction. The theoretical and experimental application of this process is demonstrated for substance systems with partial or total solid solutions. A supporting model is developed for process visualization, design, and optimization, showcasing the process principle for two selected ternary systems characterized by complete miscibility in the solid state. The thesis also incl
