En savoir plus sur le livre
About 50 percent of Earth's land area is utilized by humans, with 5,000 to 15,000 hectares of natural land sealed daily for human activities. This increasing land use has sparked both scientific and societal discussions. To comprehensively assess the environmental impacts of products or processes, land use must be integrated into methodologies like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This publication presents country and land use type-specific characterization factors for impact categories such as Erosion Resistance, Mechanical Filtration, Physicochemical Filtration, Groundwater Regeneration, and Biotic Production. These factors are derived from the land use-related flows of the European reference Life-Cycle Database (ELCD), utilizing globally available spatial data. The LANCA method, refined since its 2010 publication, incorporates new background data for these calculations. The authors have extensive experience in integrating land use into LCA and contribute to international working groups and specific projects in this field. They have also played a key role in developing the LANCA tool and conducting relevant case studies. The updated characterization factors (Version 2.5) replace previous values in the LANCA® method report, revising the reference system and introducing a Soil Quality Index (SQI), developed in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
