En savoir plus sur le livre
One of Matt Mullican’s significant inventions is the “Rubbings,” a technique he developed to create unique images without relying on traditional painting methods. From the outset of his career, Mullican sought to explore imagery beyond conventional paintings, utilizing banners, posters, and, in 1984, his first “Rubbing.” This process involves placing a canvas over a cardboard plate and using an oil stick to rub the reliefs, revealing forms on the canvas. This innovative method allows Mullican to transfer complex representations, resulting in images that serve as copies of absent originals. The cardboard plates can be reused, enabling the imagery to appear in various configurations. Each “Rubbing” stands as both a singular artwork and a reproduction, akin to a print, forming a sequence that incorporates elements from diverse sources. Tracking the “Rubbings” from 1984 to the present reveals the evolving themes and motifs in Mullican’s work, creating a visual diary of his artistic journey. The forthcoming publication features a comprehensive catalogue of these “Rubbings” from 1984 to 2015, documenting approximately 400 works through images and entries, along with an essay by Dieter Schwarz. It is published in collaboration with Kunstmuseum Winterthur.
