En savoir plus sur le livre
The second volume in the series on the archaeological exploration of ancient Gadara (Umm Qays, Jordan) by the German Protestant Institute for the Archaeology of the Holy Land focuses on three excavated areas in collaboration with Utrecht University's Theological Faculty. The large terrace, situated down the slope of the upper city, served as an urban focal point overlooking the lower city. Its western retaining wall featured a series of rooms, with a street or piazza in front. Initially constructed in the 2nd century C.E., the terrace may have housed a significant Roman forum basilica. By the 6th century, the area was transformed into a Byzantine ecclesiastical compound, including a centralized church, a basilica, and courtyards, likely serving as a pilgrims’ center, as indicated by tombs and reliquaries found. Following the collapse of the terrace’s structures, the street or piazza to the west remained active through Early Islamic to Mamluk periods, sustained by the Roman water system. Excavations in the lower city revealed part of the main street (decumanus maximus) and earlier building remains beneath it. The volume includes detailed presentations of the excavated areas, their stratigraphy, and specialized discussions on various finds, including architecture, ceramics (from the Iron Age to Mamluk periods), oil lamps, glass, and coins.
