The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), established in 1992, is a prominent research institute funded by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology and the Ministry for Science, Research and Culture of Brandenburg. Currently employing around 100 staff, including 75 scientists, PIK is expanding at the “Albert Einstein” Science Park in Potsdam. The institute emphasizes interdisciplinary climate impact research, bridging natural sciences and socioeconomic aspects, and collaborates closely with national and international partner institutes. This flexible framework allows PIK to address emerging challenges in climate research. As a hub of scientific innovation, PIK coordinates global initiatives in climate impact research and Earth System analysis, hosting project offices for international programs like IGBP. Its supercomputer, an IBM-SP2 with 20 gigaflops of power, facilitates simulations of Global Change using diverse models and data. Additionally, PIK co-organized a Workshop on Cost-Benefit Analyses of Climate Change with the Wuppertal Institute for Energy, Climate, and Environment, furthering its commitment to impactful research in the field.
