En savoir plus sur le livre

Following a forty-year hiatus since the 1950s excavations, extensive archaeological campaigns have been conducted since the 1990s in a section of the former Roman town of Carnuntum, known as “Spaziergarten,” “insula VI,” and “Open-Air Museum.” These excavations have yielded a significant number of coins, with findings published in the comprehensive volume Numismata Carnuntina – FMRÖ III.2, which also includes older collections. The new excavations utilized updated methodologies aimed at creating numismatic corpora that gather extensive information about each coin from both numismatic and archaeological perspectives. The goal is to shed light on the economic, social, and historical patterns of a residential quarter in a Roman town. The publication style emphasizes archaeological units, such as Roman streets and public edifices, alongside their stratigraphy to provide detailed information about each coin. This approach aims to equip scholars with material that can enhance their understanding of monetary circulation. Additionally, examining coins within their archaeological context aids in dating phases and highlights potential misunderstandings regarding their significance. This work aspires to serve as a valuable resource for numismatists, archaeologists, historians, and anyone interested in Roman life through the lens of coinage.
