En savoir plus sur le livre

“Are there affirmable days or places in our deteriorating world? Are there scenes in life, right now, for which we might conceivably be thankful? Is there a basis for joy or serenity, even if felt only occasionally? Are there grounds now and then for an unironic smile?” Robert Adams explores these questions in his deep engagement with the geography of the American West, weaving together over four decades of work into a cohesive narrative of the American experience. This publication elucidates the photographer’s civic goals, reflecting on the privilege of our environment and the responsibilities of citizenship. With unprecedented fidelity to Adams’ original prints, the first two volumes present nearly four hundred plates in a compelling sequence, complemented by texts written by the photographer. Volume three includes a detailed chronology of Adams’ life, an illustrated bibliography of his monographs, selections from his personal archive, and critical essays by Joshua Chuang, Tod Papageorge, Jock Reynolds, and John Szarkowski. Notable exhibitions include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and others across Europe from 2012 to 2014.
