En savoir plus sur le livre
Remembrance of a common history fosters community and collective identity, helping social groups distinguish themselves from others. War memories, in particular, play a crucial role in shaping identity, as evidenced by the historical development of nation-states where military events are central. Within the military, which emerged as a distinct social formation in early modernity, the link between collective identity and commemorative culture is significant. Creating meaning serves as a means to legitimize future claims through the interpretation of the past. The concept of military cultures of commemoration connects military historical and cultural inquiries, opening a wide research field that examines the bearers and objects of commemorative cultures, as well as the media that convey these interpretations. This includes evidence from visual arts, literature, ritual practices, and cultural stereotypes. The contributions in this anthology cover a range of topics, from late medieval battle commemorations to the Napoleonic Wars, which marked a pivotal shift in German and European commemorative practices. It explores aristocratic, civic, and Swiss Confederate commemorations, the establishment of Prussian regimental traditions, and the war memories of combatants during the Napoleonic Wars.
