In-depth economic valuation studies exist for several ecosystem services, yet preferences for ecosystem insurance services are underexplored, particularly regarding biodiversity's role in safeguarding essential ecosystem processes against unknown future environmental risks. Previous research indicates that it is feasible to quantify economic preferences for protection against both known and unknown risks. Building on this foundation, Kristin Schröder examines the determinants of human behavior related to environmental risks, focusing on the values, beliefs, and norms that influence risk-related actions. To this end, she conducted a postal survey across ten counties in Central Germany during the fall of 2009, including areas in Lower Saxony and Thuringia. The study utilized the Choice Experiment Method to elicit respondents' Willingness to Pay (WTP) for various ecosystem insurance services. Additionally, structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the underlying values, beliefs, and norms associated with respondents' WTP. The findings suggest a strong conservation emphasis on enhancing forest resistance and resilience to environmental risks, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in ecosystem management.
