Launched in 2009, the Future Internet Enterprise Systems (FInES) Cluster was initiated by the Networked Enterprise and RFID unit of the Information Society and Media Directorate-General to address challenges faced by European enterprises in the Future Internet era amid globalization and competition. Building on advancements in Enterprise Interoperability, Enterprise Collaboration, and Digital Ecosystems, the Cluster focuses on the integration of ICT in businesses. Its mission is to foster disruptive innovation by guiding research towards new business approaches and values supported by Information and Communication Technology, positioning the Internet as the business ecosystem. Following the first FP7 call for proposals, COIN emerged as the flagship project of the FInES Cluster, aiming to unify the previously separated domains of Enterprise Collaboration and Enterprise Interoperability. Recognizing the need for a cohesive approach, COIN partners aggregated valuable research results from various EU-funded projects that had focused on either domain individually, such as ATHENA, INTEROP, ABILITIES, SATINE, and TRUSTCOM for Enterprise Interoperability, alongside ECOLEAD, DBE, E4, and ECOSPACE for Enterprise Collaboration.
