This anthropological study explores a unique form of mediation practiced in Ethiopia by the Oromo and Amhara ethnic groups. It highlights the role of elder male household heads who resolve conflicts and arrange marriages for younger generations. The study addresses not only straightforward cases but also complex issues that impact the broader community or involve inter-ethnic relations. Specific case studies, including marriage, bride abduction, physical injury, and homicide, serve as illustrations. The work incorporates speech-act theory and a 'new ethnographic' approach, examining both rhetorical strategies and non-verbal communication methods such as postures, gestures, spatial arrangements, numerical symbolism, and the intentional use of attire and objects. Ritual use in mediation processes is given special attention. The study reveals significant patterns in the proceedings of elders, identifying distinct elements and phases that recur across various processes. These findings suggest that the observed regularities cannot solely be attributed to the concept of negotiation but point to a formal 'procedure' governed by its own rules. Consequently, the book advocates for a shift in perspective from 'process' to 'procedure.'
