Innovations are crucial for dynamic growth and long-term employment increases, requiring extensive interaction among various actors in technical and social processes. This includes manufacturing companies, scientific institutions, universities, technology users, and policy decision-makers. The regional environment, political framework, labor supply, research institutions, economic structure, and available networks significantly influence innovation generation. To enhance innovation, Berlin collaborates with Brandenburg on new strategies to strengthen their position in both national and international competition. The Department of Innovation Economics at the Berlin Institute of Technology evaluates the innovation potential and performance of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. Utilizing a comprehensive catalog of secondary statistical data that encompasses both the input and output sides of the innovation process, this evaluation compares the region's innovation potential and performance against ten other metropolitan regions in Germany. This monitoring builds on a previous study by Blind et al. (2011), enabling an assessment of the overall innovation system's performance in the capital region and tracking its development over time.
