Counting and computing with one’s fingers – that is a no-no! But not if you do it correctly. It is important not to mistake the path with the goal. Studies from cognitive psychology, cultural history and neuroscience show that calculations of quantity and number as well as mathematical abilities in general are closely connected to the cognitive representation of the fingers.
