The Natural Resources Research in Africa Projects encompass various initiatives aimed at addressing challenges and opportunities in the management of natural resources across the continent. Key projects include exploring nutrient-efficient agriculture in West African cities, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Andreas Bürkert, and examining mobility, networks, and institutions in resource management, led by Prof. Dr. Michael Bollig. Additionally, Dr. Matthias Waltert focuses on managing forest wildlife for human livelihoods in the Korup-Oban Hills region, while Prof. Dr. Axel Drescher investigates urbanization's impact on natural resource use in Africa. In East Africa, Dr. Franz Gatzweiler studies the role of institutions in forest resource management, and Prof. Dr. Mathias Becker assesses the agricultural use and vulnerability of small wetlands. Prof. Dr. Marcus Nüsser examines livelihood security in semi-arid areas, while the BioModels project, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfred Voß and colleagues, models biomass energy systems in rural southern Africa. The MECHAL project, coordinated by Dr. Ute Schmiedel, develops adaptive management strategies for small-scale farmers in semi-arid regions.
