Emil Du Bois-Reymond (1818-1896), a prominent Berlin physiologist, was a pioneer in employing experimental methods to explore living organisms. His major scholarly contributions include a two-volume monograph, Untersuchungen über thierische Elektricität (1841-1884), and a selection of his essays (Gesammelte Abhandlungen, 1871-1875). Du Bois-Reymond's scientific writings are celebrated for their precise documentation of experimental processes and instrumental techniques. Additionally, his ‘Addresses’ significantly contributed to 19th-century lecturing. Delivered as a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, University Rector, Professor, and Dean of the Berlin medical faculty, these lectures cover a wide range of topics, showcasing the breadth of knowledge of an educated scholar and urban intellectual. Most lectures were given after 1871, providing a rich document of the political and cultural attitudes of the German Empire, reflecting the perspectives of its scholarly elite.
