Directed metalation is a valuable methodology for the regio- and stereoselective generation of organometallic species, leading to the selective formation of organic products. Techniques such as cyclometalation with Li, Mn, and Pd, along with directed hydrometalation and carbometalation using Al and Zn, have been employed for decades in regio- and/or stereoselective synthesis. A recent advancement in chelation-assisted methodology enhances both regio- and stereoselectivity control and reaction acceleration. This approach facilitates the generation of a carbon-metal bond directly from a C-H bond, a feat not easily achieved with traditional methods. The book discusses a range of catalytic functionalization reactions of C-H bonds utilizing chelation, presented by leading experts in the field. It also explores new strategies for directed hydrometalation and carbometalation as crucial steps in synthesis. Notably, a unique stereo- and regioselective hydroformylation has emerged through directed hydrometalation, while the regioselective Mizoroki-Heck reaction exemplifies the high regioselectivity achievable through directed carbometalation. These innovative methodologies significantly impact various fields of chemistry.
