Road traffic accidents pose a significant public health challenge, claiming approximately 1.2 million lives annually and injuring around 50 million individuals worldwide. Developing countries are particularly affected, facing a rising toll of road deaths and injuries that strain limited financial and human resources. Without intervention, this trend is expected to persist, exacerbated by increasing vehicle numbers and a lack of safety culture and infrastructure. Effective countermeasures must be grounded in thorough analysis of crash events, considering their characteristics, contributing factors, and locations. Identifying accident hotspots is crucial for improving analyses, enhancing policing, and developing effective strategies. Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) offer valuable tools for this purpose, improving the accuracy and quality of data, particularly in location referencing. In this study, Dr. Calvine Kayi employs GIS and GPS to analyze road accidents in Nairobi, illustrating how policymakers in developing countries can leverage these technologies to inform and enhance their road safety policies.
