This book presents the first comprehensive cross-linguistic study of clausal negation, utilizing an extensive and systematic language sample. It delves into methodological issues, particularly regarding sampling. The study typologizes standard negation, the primary structural means for negating declarative verbal main clauses, from a fresh perspective, focusing on the structural differences between affirmatives and negatives. In symmetric negation, affirmative and negative structures differ only by the presence of negative markers, while asymmetric negation reveals additional structural differences, known as asymmetries. The book distinguishes between constructional and paradigmatic asymmetry; the former involves structural changes alongside the addition of negative markers, while the latter concerns non-one-to-one correspondences between affirmative and negative paradigms. Asymmetric negation is further categorized based on the nature of the asymmetry. The study examines the standard negation structures across 297 sample languages, discussing their frequencies and typological correlations. It proposes functional motivations for the structural types, suggesting that symmetric negatives mirror affirmative structures internally, while asymmetric negatives reflect external functional asymmetries. Relevant diachronic issues are also addressed, making the book valuable for language typologists, descriptive linguists, and those inte
