This book conducts a comparative analysis of the conflict of voices in the poetry of South African poet Dennis Brutus and Palestinian poet Mahmūd Darwīsh, exploring its development across four stages from the mid-sixties to the mid-nineties. While similarities in their poetry emerge at each stage, the analysis highlights the unique techniques each poet employs. The study connects the evolution of these voices to broader social and political changes in South Africa and Palestine. Structured into five chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion, the first part of Chapter One critiques the theories of impersonality and the death of the author, tracing the concept of voice through the writings of key theorists. The second part outlines the eclectic critical framework, primarily based on North American critics' work on voice, subjectivity, and impersonality. Each subsequent chapter examines a distinct stage in the conflict of voices: Chapter Two addresses the ‘pre-conflict’ stage, highlighting a tension between lyricism and impersonality; Chapter Three marks the eruption of conflict and polyphonic structures; Chapter Four discusses the withdrawal of conflict and lyricism; and Chapter Five presents a partial resolution through a synthesis of conflicting voices in modified lyricism.
