Modern database systems enhance traditional capabilities by managing diverse data types, including text, images, audio, and video. They are increasingly relevant to the Web, providing input for content generation and handling Internet queries. The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) plays a crucial role in various applications, from content management to e-commerce, serving as a universal communication language for exchanging music, graphics, purchase orders, and technical documentation. As database systems communicate over the Web, there is a growing desire to standardize XML as the exchange format. Consequently, many relational database systems can now export and import XML documents while offering query and update capabilities for XML data. Additionally, native XML databases and integration systems are emerging, specifically designed for storing, maintaining, and accessing XML documents. Following the success of the first XML Database Symposium (XSym 2003) in Berlin, which was held alongside VLDB, an annual symposium was established as part of VLDB. This event aims to provide a high-quality platform for presenting and discussing new research and system developments, targeting scientists, practitioners, vendors, and users of XML and database technologies.
