The contributions in this volume stem from the International Women's University (ifu) held in Hanover in the summer of 2000, focusing on the project area "Work." This area was one of six faculties, including "Information," "Body," "Migration," "City," and "Water," each addressing global themes through regional centers relevant to their topics. The project highlighted the tensions between global and local developments, examining their economic, socio-cultural, and political impacts on gender relationships. It emphasized both the new opportunities for women and the deteriorating conditions they face in a changing world. The cosmopolitan orientation of the ifu aligns with scientific internationality and interdisciplinarity, essential for curriculum design. The primary goal was to investigate the connections among globalization, work, and gender, a complex task given that globalization manifests in diverse transnational contexts and local settings. To effectively study its various impacts, a well-considered comparative approach was necessary, determining which regions would be exemplarily analyzed.
