At the start of the new millennium, fuzzy logic presents a fresh perspective in information processing, inspired by its founder, Lotfi Zadeh. This approach aims to create 'soft' tools for computing with human perceptions, which are characterized by their ability to generalize, recognize patterns, and capture the essence of various phenomena. However, this capacity is accompanied by an intrinsic imprecision in perception-based information. Zadeh argues that this imprecision prevents such information from being accurately represented using precise methods like predicate logic, which limits the effectiveness of existing scientific theories in handling perception-based data. We are on the cusp of developing a theory that can address this challenge, as evidenced by the successful industrial applications of soft computing—a robust technology rooted in fuzzy logic. The papers in this collection reflect the knowledge and experiences of researchers regarding both the engineering applications of soft computing and its broader social and philosophical implications at the dawn of the third millennium. They illustrate how fuzzy logic transforms conventional approaches to problem-solving and uncovers profound connections between problems and their solutions.
